Notes: Genus of 22 species. Robust, strong-growing climber with thick sparingly branched stems. Though this species grows happily outdoors in warmly temperate and subtropical regions, it is also a popular house plant in colder areas. As the plant climbs, it puts out long pencil-thick aerial roots, many of which do not reach the ground. Train up a moss covered stick so that the roots can be guided into the moss. Never cut the roots off, as they take in nutrients. Mature plants have long-stalked, leathery, glossy mid to deep green leaves.

The foliage is undivided and heart-shaped when young. The characteristic split edges and holes appear with age between the main lateral veins. Bears creamy white spathes usually from Spring to Summer, sometimes followed by edible, cone-shaped cream fruit that tastes of pineapple when fully ripe. Other parts may cause mild stomach upset if ingested. Grow in humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil. Propagate by rooting tip or leaf cuttings with bottom heat in Summer. Layer in Autumn.

Growing Indoors

Thrives in a warm environment with high humidity. It is happy in all degrees of light, though not in direct sunlight, but it is unlikely to flower or fruit indoors. The container needs adequate drainage holes as the plant requires a lot of water and feeding during the growing period. Easy care plant that can be grown successfully with only the minimum of attention
